College
and University Courses
|
| |
The
main costs you will have to meet are course fees which are variable
according to age, circumstances and parent's income, living costs
likely to be £3000+ and are about the same wherever you live, in
college or lodgings (except at home). Do not forget the lesser costs
like books, industrial clothing, transport and study trips. When
you first visit, ask the college or university about these costs
and also any bursaries, sponsors or scholarships to which you might
have access. The trust can make a grant, of up to £2000 a year,
which can be payable to the college or to you personally, depending
on what it is to cover. The grant will not cover a period in industrial
experience and is repayable should you drop out. (Return)

Research
and investigation projects
|
| |
Your
land based studies may involve a research tour or you may feel attendance
at a seminar or convention would be valuable but you cannot meet
the extra costs involved. A grant application could be considered
if the outcome will be to your own advantage and could have practical
value to your industry, but you will not get support where the planned
results are primarily for the benefit of the college or university
or have a philanthropic objective such as helping deprived people
or saving the environment. (Return)

Elizabeth
Hess scholarship at Tresco Abbey Gardens
|
| |
The
scholarship provides you with a practical training in learning,
growing and displaying an extensive range of sub tropical plants
and in the management of a much visited garden. The scholarship
starts in September for 12 months, although, by arrangement, there
can be some slight flexibility over the exact dates. You will be
under the direct control of the head gardener and you will be regarded
as a member of the gardening staff team. You work under instruction
for a 40 hour, 5 day week, with the usual holidays and extra paid
overtime is available in the summer. The value of the scholarship
is £4000 p.a. Paid in 12 equal monthly payments to your bank account
and there is an additional weekly supplement of £60 for food. The
initial outward and final return fares to tresco are also paid.
You will have a bed sitting room with full central heating and television,
and the fully equipped communal facilities are shared with three
others. All linen and laundry service is provided and the only need
you will have is to buy and prepare your own food. Shopping is available
from the local shop, the tresco stores, or from St. Marys on the
main island reached by the 'shopping boat'. Because there have been
scholars in the gardens for more than 30 years, you immediately
become part of the island community and past scholars have often
been involved in gig racing and the island cricket team. Although
quiet in the winter, the island attracts many summer contract young
workers, and together with serving 40,000 visitors in a year, usually
in parties to be shown around the gardens, life is anything but
quiet. (Return)
